Despite being on the scene for approximately 6 years and being an important name in the music industry since their breakthrough single #Selfie, The Chainsmokers continue to make headlines and release successful hits. Recently, one of their most recognizable tunes, “Closer” which featured Halsey, has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America with the diamond status, meaning 10 times platinum, moving more than 10 million units in the United States.
The news was broken by The Chainsmoker and by Halsey who posted on their Instagram account pictures with their new plaques which proved the status of their track. “Closer” was released in 2016 and had impressive staying power, reaching the top of the Hot 100 fast in the summer of 2016, and staying there for a long time. The track tied with a large number of blockbuster releases, and is one of the 4th longest running number 1 hits in the United States in history.
Despite the fact that The Chainsmokers already had a handful of hits before “Closer” hit the waves, it became their biggest single, and an important step in the career of Halsey, who despite the fact that she proved herself to be a rising star, reached a wider audience after the release of the song. Since then, the duo released their debut album in 2017, Memories…Do Not Open, and an EP entitled Sick Boy, and a number of successful singles. The track “Closer” received a number of awards and nominations, garnering both the duo and Halsey their first Grammy nomination. In the two years since its release, the single continued to rack up sales, proven by the diamond status just earned. Until recently, it was considered the longest-running number 1 hit on the Hot Dance/Electronic charts.
Forbes announced The Chainsmokers to be the 2nd highest-paid DJs in the world, beating fellow stars such as David Guetta, Diplo, and Steve Aoki. The duo earned $45.5 million in 2018 from music sales and touring. They are in the last stretch of their 3 year deal with Wynn Nightlife and have collected nightly check for their sets. Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers stated that he is curious to see what happens next.
